Szkoła Eksploatacji P(xlziemnej '93 Eąual to all companys in Eastem Germany the old combinates were desoWed and changed into capital-companies (stock companics or companies with limited łiability). The lignilc-cumbinates were changed into stock-companies, which are named MIBRAG and LAUbAG today. The companies are in a major redeveloping process because of the cut-back of production. It is estimated that by the year 2000 less than 100 million tons/a of lignite, a third of 1988th production, will be used. But never the less, lignite will still remain the major energy source for the eastern parts of Germany. STRUKTURĘ AND TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE LIGNITE COMPANIES. In both of the existing east german hgnite companies we have to distinguish between 1. mines and plants that are economic usefull in futurę and which will be sold to an investor, 2. parts that have to be redeveloped with huge expenditure and which do not have any economic value at present, 3. mines and plants which are necessary for a short period only and which according to this are of no economic value at present. For privatization it will be necessary to divide these parts from each other and to transfere Ihem into new companies which can be taken over by the investors, liąuidated if necessary or held by the Treuhandanstalt for a restricted time (redevelopement companies). These transactions mean enormous juridical difficulties and additionally have to be executed in a way that the employees are not caused to worry too much about their jobs. ENDEAYOURS FOR REDEYELOPEMENT ACTIONS, For redeveIopement actions in 1993 1500 million DM (which is about 1 billion US-$) will be spend. About 14600 people will be employed in these companies redeveloping old open pits and backfilled areas, tearing down old plants and cleaning contaminated soil. In 1994 and after an amount of about 1000 million DM p.a. is necessary for these tasks. To coordinate the complex tasks which concern four federal states, several regions and dozends of cities and touch the responsibilities of several govemmental and local authorities a "bureau for coordination of the redevelopement tasks" has been created few weeks ago. FINDING THE INYESTOR AND NEGOTJATIONS. As the coal from the Lausitz contains less sulfur per ton than that from Middle-Gennany the western german lignite company Rheinbraun announced its interest in the LUABAG. Sekcja I 13
