AIl the potash mines at last have been united to the VEB Kombinat Kali Sondershausen. As a result of the political changes the Kombinat was desolved and became the Mitteldeutsche Kali AG Sondershausen, a stock company in June 1990. In december 1992 after long and difficult negotiations an agreement between Treuhandanstalt and the West German Kali + Salz AG, the only potash producer in West Germany was reached. The two negotiating partners agreed upon creating a company in which the potash producing facilities of both will be joined. 51 % of the company will be owned by Kali + Salz AG and 49 % Treuhandanstalt will hołd. As Kali und Salz is in trouble too and additionally Treuhandanstalt was not willing to sell the best mina only but insists on selling the company in totał this innovative construction was necessary. A foreign investor has not been found. To free the operating mines and the new company from the responsibility for the environmental problems which have been caused in the past, a special company has been founded. The GVV is responsible for the close-down of the mines and for Ireatment of the environmental burdens. Besides the mentioned redeveloping process, new fields for business activities are opened up. The mine openings are very suitable for underground deposits of industrial waste. 5. Metal mining In the field of base metals tin, copper and pyrite have been produced. AU mines have been closed because of very Iow metal content of the crude ore. Resons for mining Iow grade ores have been the ideological reasoned attempt for autarky and on the other hand the lack of convertible currency and the possibility to gain hard currency by export of copper and tin. The metal mines still are in ownership of the THA which has the obligation to shut them down avoiding environmental impacts now and in futurę. For this the mines have been transfered to the GVV, which is responsible for the close-down of the mines and for treatment of the environmental burdens. Chart 11 shows the location of the closed mines in Eastem Germany. Sekcja I 15
