Desalination, nr 369, str. 10–17 Membrane Methods in Coal Mine Water Desalination Saline waste waters are an issue in many different branches of industry, the coal mining being particularly affected by that problem. One of the possible solutions is to use the coal mining waste waters as the source of raw materials, such as demineralized water, salt, and other mate- rials. This paper presents partial results obtained in a pilot plant working in the “Bolesław Śmiały” coal mine. The coal mine water, after being pre-treated with decarbonization and ul- trafiltration, is subjected to a two-pass nanofiltration, which splits the feed into two streams: salt-rich permeate and calcium and magnesium-rich retentate. The retentate can be used for recovery of magnesium hydroxide, the remaining calcium-rich solution could be used as a de- icing liquid. The nanofiltration permeate is concentrated in a hybrid reverse osmosis-electro- dialysis system, which produces demineralized water, highly saline concentrate, and the dilu- ate, which can be recycled either before the reverse osmosis or before the nanofiltration. The highly saline concentrate could then be sold directly or used as a source for salt crystallization.
