Energy storage systems as an opportunity to transform post – mining areas in silesia ABSTRACT: Activities connected with revitalization and restructuring of hard coal mines are carried out by Spółka Restrukturyzacji Kopalń S.A. as the legal successor of previous mining operations. The process of the liquidation of mining plants requires a number of interrelated economic, environmental and legal factors that should be taken into account. The publication presents an analysis of the possibility of conducting unconventional activities so as to release the property of mining plants put into the liquidation. An opportunity for a “new life” for post – mining areas may be the production and storage of energy or the management of pumped water from liquidated mines. These activities are the response to the region’s needs and may initiate the development of non – mining activities in the restructured industrial facilities. Areas and problems were also indicated and their solution will improve the efficiency and accuracy of the process of revitalization and restructuring of liquidated hard coal mines.
