What's next, closing coal mines? 6 The closure of mines will entail the need to solve a number of problems, the main ones being: Environmental impacts  Rise in the level of mine water and its release to the surface  Leaching of cavities in rocks and subsidence of the earth's surface  Flooding and waterlogging of territories  Deterioration of water quality in wells and boreholes  Methane release to the surface and penetration into residential buildings and premises Social consequences  Massive layoffs of mine workers  Decrease in the level of income of miners' families  Reduction of local budget revenues  Reduced funding for social facilities (hospitals, schools, kindergartens)  Decrease in population and outflow of people abroad  Increased level of organized crime  Destruction of buildings and structures due to flooding and land subsidence
