13 E FFECTIVENESS OF COAL SEAM RELAXATION IN THE LIGHT OF MICROSEISMOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS Keywords: rock burst hazard, destressing mining, induced seismicity ABSTRACT: Coal seams threatened by rock bursts are mined in the “Bielszowice” part of the “Ruda” Hard Coal Mine. The exploitation of such coal seams should be designed and per- formed in a way that minimizes the risk of rock bursts. One of the methods of minimizing the risk of rock bursts is the earlier exploitation of the adjacent destressing seam or, in the case of a thick seam, the destressing layer. The effectiveness of coal seam relaxation can be con- firmed, among others, by the development of seismic activity during its excavation. In the arti- cle the results of microseismological observations during longwall mining of destressing seam no. 507 and destressed coal seam no. 510 are compared. The mining of longwall panels in these coal seams was characterized by extremely different levels of seismicity and the pa- rameters calculated on its basis. The relaxation of coal seam no. 510 as a result of the earlier extraction of coal seam no. 507 was confirmed.
