What is oxidative stress? Oxidative stress is a complex chemical and physiological phenomenon occurring in all living organisms, which accompanies the response to any type of abiotic and biotic stress. In higher plants, oxidative stress is caused by the overproduction and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plant tissues. Oxidative stress leads to damage to the structural elements of cells, which causes their dysfunction. The factors causing oxidative stress include mainly the continuous production and imbalance between the production of ROS and their removal.
