Highly metamorphosed coals and medicinal oximetry Anthracites as highly metamorphosed coals contains large aromatic units, which is paramagnetic. Aromatic coal units also exist in inertinite, and carbonized coals and plants. Unpaired electrons delocalized on these aromatic units are responsible for EPR signals. Amplitudes of these EPR lines depend on oxygen content in the environment. This correlation is used in medicine in oximetry.
