Title: Decentralizing trust in asset tracking using blockchain: Blockchain case studies from the mining industry.
Blockchain is a technology that provides a fully decentralized ledger tracking history and changes of state of assets. It has a number of unique characteristics, such as immutability, provenance, finality and distributed consensus. Effectively, this allows for untrusted parties (individuals, organizations) to transact with each other and track the history of assets with a certainty that their integrity has never been tampered with. IBM is a global leader in blockchain, with a track record of 600+ engagements worldwide and a number of implementations in CEE region, including Poland. The objective of this session is to familiarize the audience with the principles of blockchain technology and its main characteristics that directly affect mining industry. We will provide provide examples from three major implementations of blockchain in mining industry: (1) Responsible Sourcing Blockchain Network (RSBN) which is used to drive transparency in the supply chain end to end by focusing on the responsible nature of how these minerals are procured, from every step on the tier as minerals transform from raw materials through finished product to consumables (2) MineHub which addresses digitization and the trading aspects of minerals and (3) ERG, focusing on Cobalt provenance to provide a proof of quality. We will end up with a list of practical steps needed to introduce blockchain in a larger enterprise architecture and digitization agenda of mining companies, their clients and their suppliers.
